Steve Ashworth is Director of Employment Tax & Global Mobility at Newfields Law, specialising in PAYE/NIC compliance, workforce risk and cross border employment issues. With more than 40 years’ experience advising employers, he supports organisations in highly regulated sectors — particularly sport and healthcare — where international recruitment, complex pay structures and HMRC scrutiny create unique challenges.
Steve began his career at HMRC, where he became a national trainer in employer compliance and helped shape the department’s approach to PAYE, NIC, National Minimum Wage and worker classification. He left HMRC over 20 years ago and has since spent two decades working with leading professional services firms across the South West, developing deep expertise in employment tax, global mobility and people related compliance.
At Newfields, Steve advises clubs, healthcare providers and organisations navigating high stakes employment decisions, including international hires, off payroll engagements and residency linked risks. Known for translating complex rules into clear, practical guidance, he works at the pace required in elite sport and frontline healthcare, helping clients stay compliant, confident and ahead of HMRC challenge.
Outside of work, Steve is actively involved in the South West’s food and hospitality sector. He serves as a Non Executive Director for community focused organisations, is a judge for regional food and drink awards, and presents on Apple FM, where he showcases local businesses and community initiatives. He also enjoys exploring the region’s food scene and spending time with his family.
